Dog rings make up a part of the gearbox of an F1 car, and help it function. Paired with ‘dogs’ - which act as teeth - the two work in unison to help engage the gears. When an F1 driver needs to shift gear, when slowing down or speeding up, the dog rings move and sets of dogs engage with them. Once engaged, it locks the gear. Dog ring gearboxes are predominantly used in racing, as they allow the drivers to shift from gear to gear more swiftly, without the need for a clutch as all that is needed is a minor interruption to the engine torque. It also means the engine will be powering the wheels for a larger proportion of time.

In 2012, the team finished fifth in the constructor's standings, with Rosberg scoring 93 points and Schumacher gaining 49, accumulating to a total of 142 points for the team - the team’s best finish being Rosberg’s first place in China.
